We were hooked when we saw pictures of the murals in Les Sables d'Olonne ("The Sands of Olonne"). What is unique is that the murals are composed of locally collected seashells mounted by a single artist. The murals are in a small neighborhood (le Quartier de l'ille de Penotte) near the beach. You can see all the murals in less than an hour or so, but it is well worth a special trip to the Atlantic coast to see them and enjoy so much more in the town which is also known for its surfing, sailing and many festivals. And, as practically everywhere in France, excellent restaurants abound, including a reasonably priced (well, relative to prices in Paris) Michelin-starred restaurant. Below is an example of the murals, and you can see pictures of hundreds more at this link.
